Nine East Network currently administers Title I programs at two independent residential schools, Bennington School, Inc., and Camp E-Wen-Akee.
At the Bennington School, remedial instruction in the areas of math and literacy are two foci of the Nine East Network staff. Assistance with developing skills needed to transition to adulthood is another important component of the program. Vocational and technical skills are gained by the students through work with the Nine East staff, both on campus and at our office on North Street. In addition to academic offerings, Nine East has created artistic opportunities for students through a photography program, drama club, and drumming circles.
The Title I program at Camp E-Wen-Akee focuses on supplementing the camp’s Wilderness Education program. This is done by:
- Conducting nationally standardized and normed progressive assessment of students using the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP — see link below) developed by Northwest Evaluation Association
- Providing and arranging professional-development experiences for teachers and counselors
- Providing direct transition services to youth
- Assessing the language level and style of therapeutic group interventions at camp and working with the site to make adjustments
- Maintaining a resource library for camp staff
Nine East Network is licensed by Northwest Evaluation Association to administer Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), a computerized adaptive-assessment tool that accurately reflects students’ performance levels and measures growth over time. MAP also provides valuable resources aligned with state standards to assist teachers in targeting their instruction in reading, math, and language usage.
Ansell-Casey Life Skills tools are used to support life-skills development, decision making, vocational and employment opportunities, and transitional planning. Title I staff works with students to support the attainment of their goals for successful transition into adulthood. Instruction and transition planning is a combination of experiential learning opportunities embedded in the school programs, transition classes, and student-created learning plans.
