April 2016 Vermont Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind Advisory Council Meeting
Current members of the Vermont Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind Advisory Council met on April 27, 2016.
The meeting was co-chaired by Bill Hudson and Linda Hazard. Thirteen other members were in attendance with four interpreters present, as well as one guest, and the keeper of the minutes, Patricia Thompson.
The Advisory Council discussed the status of the current bill S.66, expected to pass in the legislature this session. Also, some members of the Council who recently attended the National EHDI Conference in San Diego provided an update about that event.
At the EHDI Conference, it was decided that the Vermont Chapter of Hands & Voices would be revived. This organization is parent-driven to support families of deaf or hard of hearing children. Therese Urban has stepped up to serve as President.
Also, the Vermont D/HH/DB Advisory Council reviewed the six themes and gaps that are affecting all age groups- coordination and delivery of services; professional capacity; data collection, collation, and tracking; accessibility (language, communication, equipment; outreach and public education; psychosocial and emotional support.
These six areas will guide the work of the age-based committees.
